Art & Science
My name is Mette Hansgaard, I am from 1974, and I have been doing Art and exhibitions within paintings and watercolors in Denmark since 1987.
I work as a visual artist at the intersection of art and science, collaborating with researchers to explore and interpret some of the most pressing questions of our time about climate, the universe and light. Through painting, watercolor and sculpture, I create narratives that translate scientific knowledge and observations into sensory and visual experiences.

Art & Science – Storytelling in collaboration with scientists and geologists, expressed through painterly narratives in painting and sculpture.
I am deeply engaged with the Earth and its natural processes, and I particularly enjoy collaborating with geologists, as working with them always opens up a universe of discovery and new knowledge about landscapes, deep time and materiality. This knowledge becomes a central material in my artistic practice.

In 2022, I took part in an art and climate expedition to Greenland, where I worked closely with climate researchers. I experienced the inland ice firsthand and participated in a tree-planting project as part of an artistic and ecological process. These experiences have strongly influenced my subsequent work, in which the fragility of the Earth and humanity’s responsibility toward nature are central themes.

Exhibitions and the communication of research make a strong combination
My exhibitions also serve as platforms for science communication, which I see as a vital part of my practice. I find it an exciting and meaningful way to bring art and science together for the public, allowing complex subjects to be understood and felt in new ways.

Artexhibition about the light from the universe by Artgroup Artluminis.dk – coming up.
In 2027, I will begin a new collaboration with researchers on a series of exhibitions exploring the universe and light. These projects are currently in an early development phase and are planned as a touring exhibition in Denmark, But also with the ambition of also being shown internationally, including in Germany, the Netherlands and France so let me know if you have ideers for our project.
My aim is to create art that builds bridges between research and the public — works that not only inform, but invite reflection, sensory engagement and a deeper understanding of our place in the world.
