Sculptures

Sculptures by Danish Artist Mette Hansgaard

In my artistic practice, I create ceramic sculptures where form, surface, and texture come together in a unified expression. The sculptures are hand-built in clay—a tactile, responsive material that allows for both intuitive and precise work. Each piece is unique, shaped through a slow and immersive process where my hands and the clay are in constant dialogue.

Once the sculptures are formed and dried, they are decorated with slip patterns—often organic or geometric—that add an extra layer of narrative and visual depth. These patterns bring contrast to the surface and give the sculptures a textile-like quality. The motifs are inspired by natural forms, traditional ornamentation, or purely intuitive expressions.

Glazing

The final step is glazing, which enhances the character of the clay and gives the surface a distinctive richness and texture. The glaze may be glossy or matte, vibrant or subtle, depending on the mood and message I wish to convey in each piece.

My ceramic sculptures exist in the space between abstraction and figuration. They invite touch, contemplation, and a sensory encounter with the material. Each sculpture holds traces of hands, time, and story—offering a quiet presence that speaks through form and surface.
